Civil Services Examination
The Civil Services Examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year. It consists of three stages :
1. Civil Services Preliminary Examinations (CSP) usually conducted in the second week of May.
2.Civil Services (
3. Those candidates who successfully passed the main examination is eligible to appear in the Interview Board at
I. PRELIMARY EXAMINATION (CSP):
It consists of two papers:
1. Optional Subject to be selected from the UPSC Notification (300 marks). Any one of the subjects can be selected by the candidates as their Optional Subject.
Subjects for Optional subject: Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology, Indian History, Law, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology.
2. General Studies is for 150 marks.
Two Papers consist of 450 marks totally. Each Paper is of two hours duration. The blind candidates are allowed to take extra time of 20 minutes for each paper. The syllabi for the optional subjects are at the degree level. The question paper will be both in English and Hindi.
II.CIVIL SERVICES MAIN EXAMINATION:
The Main Examination consists of
1. Two Optional Subjects: Each Optional consists of two papers namely Paper I and Paper II (300 each) = 1200 marks. Each paper is of 3 hours.
2. General Studies consists of two papers Paper I and Paper II and each carries 300 marks. So G.S has 600 marks altogether. Each paper is of 3 hours.
3. One Essay paper carries 200 marks. It is of 3 hours
4. Two Language papers: One is any Indian Language and the other is General English.Both are of 10th Standard level. And it is important to note that both are qualifying papers. Each of these papers also carries 300 marks each. But the marks obtained in these papers will not consider for the ranking. These papers are of qualifying in nature. Shortly, the other papers will be evaluated if the candidate passed this language papers. This is to test the ability of the candidate’s proficiency in his Mother Tongue and also in General English.So the Main Examination carries 2000 marks totally. Sufficient choice of questions will be given in the examination.

Literatures available as an Optional Subject: Arabic, Assamese, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, German, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Marathi, Malayalam, Manipuri, Nepali, Oriya, Pali, Persian, Punjabi, Russian, Sanskrit, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu.
The following combinations not allowed are:
Political Science & International Relations and Public Administration
Commerce and Management
Anthropology and Sociology
Mathematics and Statistics
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
Management and Public Administration
Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science and Medical Science
Any two branches of engineering.
Combination of two literatures in the above list.
III. INTERVIEW TEST:
The Interview Test carries 300 marks. The candidate will be interviewed by a Board. This is really an assessment of not only his intellectual qualities but also social traits and his interest in current affairs. The technique of the interview is not that of a strict cross-examination but of a natural, purposive conversation which is intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate. Candidates are expected to have taken an intelligent interest not only in their special subjects of academic study but also in the events which are happening around them both within and outside their own State or Country.
Selection Procedure: The ranking will be based on the marks obtained in the Main Examination and the Interview Test. The total marks of these two stages (Mains and Interview) is 2300
